Successful St Petroc’s walk on the longest – and hottest?- day of the year

The annual walk between St Petroc’s Church, South Brent, and St Petroc’s, Harford, was again a very successful occasion on 21st June this year. Starting at 2pm in South Brent, the walkers were told about the ancient graveyard by 2 members of the congregation, Rev Peter Taylor and Patrick McCulloch, in line with this year’s Harford Special Spaces theme ‘Grave Matters’. Between them, Peter and Patrick have done a huge amount of research into the graves and it was fascinating to hear about some of the more notable ones.

From the church 17 of us set off up the lanes towards Owley Moor Gate. It was a very hot afternoon, but the initial part of the walk was mainly in shade.

Out on the open moor we were reassured to have 3 members of the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team keeping an eye on us in the hot sunshine. We took our time, drank lots of water and all made it to Spurrells Cross, which formed part of the monks’ route from Plympton priory to Buckfast Abbey in the past. The views down over the South Hams were beautiful

From here it was mainly downhill to Harford, where a delicious tea was waiting for us in the cool of the church. We were meant to look at some of the Harford graves, but by this stage of the day everyone was more interested in scones than stones! We were joined at St Petroc’s Harford by 9 other people, making it a a goodly throng.
